Winter is finally over, with spring kicking in, bringing the warmth you desperately desired for the last few months. However, there's still a bit of cold wintery weather left, with you sitting in the chill, fingers freezing as you tinker away in your garage. Here's the guide to help keep your garage warm to give you the comfort you deserve.
1. Weatherstripping
Weatherstripping is the process of sealing cracks in windows, access doors etc in order to keep elements such as wind, rain and other elements out.
Weatherstripping is vital in order to keep the cold out and retain the warmth. Drafts you feel in your garage are often either because of unsealed garage doors (see below) or bad weatherstripping. Over time weatherstripping can break down becoming cracked and brittle allowing air to seep through and create cold drafts.
If you can feel these drafts it might be time to fix or replace your weatherstripping. In order to do so you'll need to scrape off any sealant and remove the current application.
Once removed you'll need to remeasure and apply the new weatherstripping, aligning it properly such that it covers any open cracks or holes.
2. Insulate the walls
Normally most garages will contain some form of insulation, this insulation maintains the heat in your garage stopping any warm air from escaping. Sometimes garages are neglected when it comes to insulation, because people seem to forget how much time we can spend in our garages.
If you don't have insulation or you feel like your current setup just isn't cutting it, then it might be a good idea to upgrade your insulation. The first step is choosing something from the variety of insulation options, fiberglass batt insulation being a cheap, easily accessible choice. There are many other options, including wool, cellulose, polyurethane foam and polystyrene.
Installing insulation needs to be done carefully. The fiberglass has to fit in with precision, meaning that the material has to be cut to fit the exact shape while ensuring that it isn't forced or jammed inside the space.
