Ember attack and the best way to protect your home

Our commitment to help the Australian Bushfire Crisis

We are all finding it difficult to comprehend just how much sorrow and devastation the catastrophic fires have caused to our beautiful country and the dreadful effect it is having on our people.

We want to help the people in our own backyard, so we are going to donate 10% of EVERY order placed online to the Rural Fire Service between now and the end of the summer 2020 - 29th February, 2020.

We want to precede this article by reiterating that if you are in high risk, leaving early before a fire approaches is always the safest option.

“…devasting…” “…record breaking temperatures…” “…huge blazes…” “…infernos…”

These are the words describing the unprecedented fires ravaging our nation.

If fire threatens your vicinity, there is a risk that your property could be caught in an ember attack.

Embers play such a large part in the spread of fire.

By now you would most likely have seen images of glowing embers darting and surrounding the red and smoky footage taken during our current bushfire crisis.

Embers can travel up to 40 kilometers ahead of the fire-front, starting spot fires and igniting combustible materials outside the home.

They also play a present hazard, as the debris can be sucked into exposure points in the home through the high winds that occur with bushfires.

The danger of ember attack can also still be present even when the bushfire has passed and embers are often as hot as the fire that created them.

What are embers? Embers are burning twigs, leaves and pieces of debris.

In Australia, bark is the predominant firebrand of embers - fibrous stringy bark can throw spotfires up to 4 kilometers; smooth gum bark can travel up to 40 kilometers – these are the ones we mentioned earlier, but in a very intense fire all embers have the capability to travel those distances.

The CSIRO have conducted re-enactment test studies on embers and the facts of fire, which the Bushfire Foundation have posted on their website, that is well worth a view.

You can see our concern; embers are a real and serious risk to your safety and property.

Ask yourself the questions - Will this happen to me? What can I do to protect my home?

As in a previous post, we recommend you go to the myfireplan site to get instructions and tips to best sort out a plan for you and your family.

While we are still in this heightened situation of risk please take the time to look at the tips below and the links credited at the bottom of the page. Planning and preparation is key.

  • Trim away any branches and overhanging trees or shrubs that are close to your home.
  • Keep your outside areas clear of any combustible materials – clear away door mats, wood piles, paint, leaves and even outdoor furniture.
  • Clear out combustible leaves and debris from your roof’s gutters and areas around your home – those leaves that build up at the garage entrance and near fence lines on your property.
  • Make sure your hoses will reach around your home and are in good working condition – but be aware that your garden hose is no match for spot or intense fires
  • Install Cleverseal Cinderseal brush door seals on your garage door. Burning embers can set your home on fire.

We can help you with flame retardant seals for your garage, shed or industrial doors.

Our seals have been specifically developed for protection against ember attack. Cleverseal Cinderseal is PA6 Nylon flame retardant material which self-extinguishes when ember contact is made. It achieves a flammability index of less than 5. It is deemed to comply with AS3959:2018 Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas.
